Cidomos: The Local Transport on Gili Meno. If your Gili Meno accommodation is on the west or east side of the island, it will take at least 15 minutes to walk there from the pier. This is less than comfortable in the heat when you're carrying luggage. There are horse cart drivers (cidomos) sitting by the pier that are ready and waiting drive.

Etymology. The name Cidomo is derived from the Sasak word cika or cikar (a traditional handcart), dokar (Balinese for pony cart) and mobil (Indonesian for car) for the wheels used to move it. [1] It is also known as benhur after similarities to the Roman carts in the film Ben-Hur and Lombok "Ferrari". [2]

Unique to the Gilis all forms of motorized transport are still not allowed - meaning the only way to get around is on foot, by bicycle and in pony carts known as Cidomos. One sign of change is the recent introduction four ATM machines on the three Gili Trawangan to be found at Hotel Vila Ombak and Coral Beach.

There are also small horse-drawn carriages that go around the island called cidomos. While some of the cidomos are well-cared for, we do not recommend using cidomos for transportation. Many of them are overworked in the high heat and humidity, and are under excess stress due to the construction needed to rebuild Gili Trawangan.

However, one of the island's best kept secrets is Stud Horseback Riding Adventures tucked away at the bottom of the hill on 33 hectares of land. There are currently 13 horses living at Stud, and 2 retired Stud horses living elsewhere on the island, all enjoying the freedom to roam. What could be better than horse back riding on the beach!
