Red oak flooring is one of the most commonly used hardwood floors, mostly because it's (relatively) affordable, and durable. We chose white oak floors for our previous new build. We are currently renovating a home that already has white oak floors so we are matching those.

here . We really like the look of white oak- it's warm and inviting without being overly red. If we wanted to rip up the existing red oak and replace it with white oak, it would easily cost six figures. Instead, we did our research and found out that we could get close to the look of white oak by sanding the red oak and applying a white wash.

If you love the natural look of red oak floors without stain, by all means, go for it! However, we found that staining the floors slightly darker, combined with balancing out the redness to achieve a more neutral light brown color, which fit our vision much better.

Source. Our beams are made of cedar which has more red than this reclaimed white pine. I tested using Minwax again . 1/2 Weathered Oak to 1/2 Classic Gray. 3/4 Classic Gray to 1/4 Jacobean. Jacobean. None of these really gave me the look I wanted from the cedar. Jacobean was way too dark.

Know your floors. White oak and red oak will look different when the same stains are applied to them. That's just the nature of wood. Definitely know what type of floor you are working with! If you like a stain but something still feels off, you can mix it with other stains to get the right look. That's what we ended up doing (more on that below).

Red Oak really shines with the medium stain colors. There is just a depth of color here that you don't see in something like pine. Again I think these are all really nice options here.
