Glitter Mountain was an old mineral mine once upon a time . There are no shafts there today, only a large pit and hills of rock and mineral deposits. The crystals are gypsum, a mineral that easily splits into sheets and forms distinct crystals. For the littles, we just walked around and let them pick up crystals on the ground.

Fortunately, my sister found the answer: Glitter Mountain. Located just south of the Utah/Arizona border, lies an old gypsum mine. Known by locals as Glitter Mountain, Sparkle Mountain, or just the Old Gypsum Mine, it really lives up to it's name. As you approach the location, the sunlight catches the gypsum on the ground and in the rock.

Travel about 1/4 mile on River Rd. and turn left into dirt parking area which has a sign that says "Little Black Mountain Petroglyph Site".

Glitter Mountain is only about 30 minutes from St. George making it the perfect day trip! I recommend using Google Maps to navigate. (Apple Maps gave some weird results for directions.) The Glitter Mountain mining pit is in Arizona, not Utah.
