Long ago replaced by a failed shopping plaza, the El Rancho Rankin Motel still fascinates Tristate residents. It was built by William Rankin Harrison, a colonel in the Honorable Order of Ohio Colonels, an organization of his founding.

The 106-room motel was known for its garish, giant plastic animals and green neon lighting.It was cited for violations of fire, health and building codes and condemned in mid-1996.Mayerson-Anderson is also developing an expansion of its successful Rookwood Pavilion development in Norwood.

September 28, 2018· A lot of folks ask about our El Rancho Motel sign, believing it to be from Cincy's infamous El Rancho Rankin Motel, which closed in the 1990's. We've decided to clear things up once and for all-- The El Rancho Rankin Motel was established by William Rankin Harrison in 1940.

As the years went by things began to go downhill and seedy. In the early 80s readers of the Cincinnati Magazine voted "The El Rancho Rankin" the worst hotel in Cincinnati with many accusations of wild women running around with many rooms only being used by the hour. Although true in the 60s - 70s, by the 80's things were a lot less exciting.

727 E. McMillan St Rankin Harrison was born in Tennessee and came to Cincinnati in the 20's. He went to work as a bus boy at the Sinton Hotel and then at the Elks Hall at Ninth & Elm Sts. He then went to barber school and beauty school and upon graduation opened Rankin Barber Shop and Beauty Shop.

A man by the name of Rankin Harrison built the The El Rancho Rankin Motel here in the 1940's. Harrison called himself an "Ohio Colonel," a member of the National Commander of the Honorable Order of Ohio Colonels, a secret fraternal organization he himself founded.
