Masham Market Place is said to be one of the largest in England. Elegant Georgian houses stand around its periphery with an ancient cross and cobbled area at its centre. It was given its first market charter in 1251. At that time Masham was quite an active place to be with mills, cloth making, tanning and sheep farming.

The marketplace, AKA the Masham Market Square, is one of the biggest in England. Lined by quaint Georgian properties, the cobble-stoned square exudes a delightfully historic vibe. The town is also an artistic and cultural hub of Yorkshire. Indeed, it's a hive of artists and craftspeople while its pub culture and breweries are well-known.

Masham's importance as a major sheep market is the reason for the large market place and its Georgian houses. The market originally thrived because of its nearness to Jervaulx and Fountains Abbeys, with their large flocks of sheep. From 1875 the town was served by the Masham branch of the North Eastern Railway. Passenger services were stopped.
