In March 1948 the Brigade was disbanded, but was reformed in 1981 in Munster, West Germany. In its entire history it the 4th Armoured Brigade had only been in the United Kingdom for about six months. Some of the regiments that served have been disbanded or merged over the years, but the Black Rat (Jerboa) emblem is still worn proudly by the men.

That year a United Nations mandated coalition force liberated Kuwait after Iraq had invaded its neighbour. During the World War Two (1939-1945) the Brigade was part of the 7th Armoured Division.

7th Armoured Division Desert Rats
The Memorial and main plaque inaugurated on the 23rd October 1998 by Field Marshal Lord Carver is located on the A1065 two miles north of Mundford, Norfolk, England. The additional plaque commemorating the Desert Rats of the 4th & 7th Armoured Brigades from 1945 to 2003 was added to the plinth and inaugurated during the Open Day on the 27th June 2004 in the presence of Brigadier Adrian.

The 8th Hussars was a founder member of the Division and it's soldiers were called Desert Rats. The badge was instigated by Major-General P C S Hobart and depicts a Desert Jerboa which is a small nocturnal creature that leaps on strong hind legs.
