I place the crafting areas together and make it the focal point for villager gathering with a dining area near the kitchen. In medival villages there was a good chance that there was a light fortified manor next by. Most likely it was a wooden structure with some kind of palisad and trench. I know of a few exemples of single big farms with their own trench. But these are also not from the middle age, but from the Thirty Year War era.

Use the compass to get proper angles and alignment with other buildings. If you don't want animals roaming the village, fence them in. Try to leave some trees here are there, for ambiance.

On the East side: Sewing (NE) beside Smithy (SE): both face c/yard. On the West side: Barn: face c/yard On the North side: Main Storage: face c/yard On the South side: Food Storage: face c/yard
