Here is a look at the Standard: The SG Standard has a pretty, bound fingerboard made from rosewood, complete with classic Gibson trapezoid inlays and with a somewhat thicker design. By comparison, the Special has smaller inlays and more of a vintage look. This is a cosmetic difference for the most part.

Maple neck isn't for everyone. The SG Tribute from Gibson's Modern Collection is a stone-cold classic rock machine boasting open-coil 490R and 490T humbucking pickups, and it comes in a choice of two satin nitrocellulose lacquer finishes - a '60s-vibe Vintage Cherry Satin or 70s-chic Natural Walnut. Now, the Tribute isn't the most traditional.

The SG Standard 61's nut width is 43mm, or 1 11/16". This size of the nut is the most common width of electric guitars. This gives guitarists good string separation at the nut and makes it easy to play open chords without muting the strings. Despite the medium nut width, bar chords are difficult to play without excessive stretching of the fingers.

The lightweight SG guitar style has been a hit for decades. Gibson SGJ's traditional "slab" mahogany body makes it incredibly comfortable, even for long playing sessions. A '50s rounded profile maple neck completes the picture, giving you the easy action you need to pull off fast runs with your SGJ. A real good deal on a real Gibson SG

Published August 04, 2022 by Tony Bacon Gear History Gibson introduced the new solidbody SG design in the early '60s because it figured its original Les Paul models were obsolete and needed replacements. We know now, of course, that Gibson was wrong. But the decision turned out to have great consequences for guitarists today.

I'm just trying to understand the logic, as to why Gibson would produce certain SGs with a maple neck, vs. mahogany, and what possible pros or cons those may have. May 11, 2016, 1:10 PM

Gibson must have noticed the Stratosphere Twin and Bigsby's early efforts, because in '58 the firm introduced its first two double-necks, which were thinline hollowbody models with double pointed cutaways and no f-holes. The EDS-1275 Double 12 had a regular six-string lower neck and a 12-string upper neck, just like the Twin.

#1 I was just curious, how common is a maple neck on an SG? Besides the all maple SG raw power (I must admit the black with maple neck and fingerboard is quite fetching) and a handful of custom shop offerings (I.e. Angus Young) I don't even see the maple neck/rosewood fingerboard pop up too often. Was this ever an option?
