Daisy Makeig-Jones (1881-1945) is perhaps best known for her Fairyland Lustre wares, lavishly-decorated pieces which depicted fantastical scenes of her own imagination. Lesser discussed, however, are her early pieces, referred to as Ordinary Lustres or China Lustres. Though monikered "ordinary," these non-Fairyland lustres were anything but.

March 25, 2021 Highlights By Louise Irvine Ninety years ago, in April 1931, Daisy Makeig Jones left Wedgwood after a blazing row with Josiah Wedgwood IV. Initially, she had been asked to retire from her position as the designer of Fairyland Lustre, but she refused and continued to come to work.

Fairyland Lustre is the name given to a type of lustrous and brightly coloured decorative china made by the factory of Josiah Wedgwood and Sons under the artistic direction of Daisy Makeig-Jones between 1916 and 1941. Susannah Margaretta Makeig-Jones (l88l-l945) was an important designer for Wedgwood in the period around the First World War and is mainly recognised for her Fairyland Lustre work. Known from childhood as 'Daisy', she was born on 31 December 1881 at Wath-upon-Dearne, near Rotherham, Yorkshire where her father had a medical practice.
