It means there is a mask of yalung in the area. Listen for the chanting. When it gets louder you are really close to it. If you're having trouble finding one, get outside of the blue area and waypoint it. The waypoint will actually be on the mask, which will point you in the right direction, very useful for getting the elevation right.

Thing is, as stated before, it breaks immersion. Which is a terrible thing to have in an open world game like this. Granted, it really isn't the worst form of immersion breaking, but it is an annoyance. An annoyance that, in my opinion, could have been patched out in this full-price-plus-season-pass triple A game.
