Piazza was commissioned by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange (1913-2005) as part of a large, multi-building complex for the regional government of Emilia-Romagna, itself part of Tange's ambitious masterplan for the city of Bologna. As built, Piazza is a spatializing ensemble consisting of two large elements: a massive granite column turned on its side and raised on a truncated pyramid.
