Bibi was Madeleine Messager, the first wife of the photographer and painter Jacques-Henri Lartigue. She was photographed constantly by her husband, her weariness of his invasive camera habits evident in many of the pictures.

Jacques Henri Lartigue began taking photographs at the age of 6, but was discovered in the United States in 1963, when he was 69 years old. His first American exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the following year focused on the first years of his work, those of the Belle Epoque; he quickly became famous for his stunning images.

Jacques Henri Lartigue has one of those life stories which might have been written for cinema. Born in Courbevoie, France, at the tail-end of the 19th century, he cut his teeth photographing friends and family playing outside as a young boy before moving onto shooting sports events in his adolescence, a combination of which made him particularly adept at capturing people in motion.

Bibi in my cyclecar Mediterranean Sea, September 12th, 1927. Having a motor car in this landscape is magical… the drive to Cannes along the narrow, deserted little road that follows the coastline via Golfe Juan is wonderful.
