Zaaiers hielden Van Gogh zijn hele kunstenaarsleven bezig. In totaal maakte hij meer dan dertig tekeningen en schilderijen met hetzelfde thema. Deze zaaier schilderde hij in het najaar van 1888. Van Gogh werkte in die tijd samen met Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). Die vond dat hij minder naar de werkelijkheid moest werken, en meer uit zijn verbeelding.
