Jan van Scorel was born in Schoorl, a small town near Alkmaar in the northern Netherlands. He probably received his first training from the painter Cornelis Buys I in Alkmaar before moving to Amsterdam in 1512 where he entered the studio of Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen as an apprentice.

Van Scorel was one of the first North Netherlandish painters to visit Italy. He travelled through Germany and Carinthia to Venice and made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He returned to Venice around 1520. About two years later he moved to Rome, where a Dutchman had been elected pope.

Jan van Scorel (1495-1562) (b Schoorl, nr. Alkmaar, 1 Aug. 1495; d Utrecht, 6 Dec. 1562). Netherlandish painter, the first artist to bring the ideals of the Italian Renaissance to the area we today call Holland. His training is said to have included a period in Utrecht with Gossaert, who probably encouraged him to visit Italy.

Volgens Van Mander werd Jan van Scorel geboren in het dorp Schoorl, dichtbij Alkmaar, waar hij de Latijnse school doorliep. In 1512 verhuisde Jan naar Amsterdam, waar hij assistent werd in het bruisende atelier van Jacob Cornelisz. Met een gedegen opleiding op zak, vertrok de getalenteerde twintiger rond 1518 naar het buitenland.
