Vlieger Work Amsterdam Signpainters
A varied artist, Simon de Vlieger painted and drew seascapes, beach scenes, and landscapes, as well as a few genre scenes and portraits. His earliest dated works are of 1624. The early paintings are strongly influenced by Jan Porcellis (1584-1632) and chiefly depict ships and fantastic rocky coasts. Around 1630 he painted his first beach scenes.

As a painter, Simon de Vlieger (1601-1653) specialized in marine scenes ranging from stormy shipwrecks to ceremonial parades. Although he also occasionally painted forest scenes, it was as a draughtsman that he most fully explored the genre of landscape, and the Crocker drawing typifies this important aspect of his career.

Biography. Dutch painter, mainly of marine subjects, active in his native Rotterdam, Delft, and Amsterdam. One of the outstanding marine painters of his period, he moved from stormy subjects in the manner of Porcellis to serene and majestic images that influenced van de Cappelle and Willem van de Velde the Younger. De Vlieger also painted a few landscapes and genre pictures.
