The Archaeological Site of Ancient Thera is the second most important archaeological site in Santorini after Ancient Akrotiri. It was uncovered during large-scale excavations between 1896 and 1902 by German archeologist Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen. The ruins on the NE and NW slopes were excavated by N. Zapheiropoulos between 1961-1982.

Visiting Akrotiri by bus. There are regular buses from Fira (the central bus station for the island) to the car park at Akrotiri Red Beach throughout the week. Form there it is about a 250 metre walk to the archaeological site. From Fira to the Red Beach car park takes about 20 minutes, and costs around €2 for an adult.

The excavation there, begun in 1896 by Baron Hiller von Gaertringen in the area of Mesa Vouno, revealed ruins of town which bore evidence of settlement as early as 9th century BC.
