The city was founded in 1737 as a fortress. Tolyatti was originally established as a fortress by the Russian Empire in 1737 to protect their territory from nomadic tribes. The city was renamed Tolyatti in 1964. Prior to 1964, Tolyatti was known as Stavropol-on-Volga. The city was renamed in honor of the Italian communist leader, Palmiro Togliatti.
