First Name. Until the 17th century Soho - now one of the busiest areas of Central London - was still a series of open fields. Aristocrat land-owners and property developers gradually transformed it into a suburb that mixed grand homes for the gentry with workshops for artisans. The development of Soho into a densely-packed suburb occurred.

At Soho's northern end, this leafy square is the area's back garden. It was laid out in 1681, and originally named King's Square; a statue of Charles II stands in its northern half. In the centre is a tiny half-timbered mock-Tudor cottage built as a gardener's shed in the 1870s.

Though Soho Square was laid out in 1681, it wasn't until the end of the 19th century that a distinctive half-timbered Gardener's Hut was placed at the centre, which according to local legend contained the entrance to a secret tunnel that links to Buckingham Palace.
