Simos is the most famous beach of Elafonisos, and the largest, too. Its peculiar shape has turned out to be the symbol of the island and people come to Elafonisos mostly because they have seen photos of Simos. Simos actually consists of two beaches, Frango and Sarakiniko which merge together and form a small sandspit. The white sand looks endless.

The beach scenery is complemented by the large sand dunes and the unique Kedros forest which extends up to the near beach of Sarakiniko (Megali Paralia). The beach seems to have taken its name from the Kalymnian sponge diver, Simos, who drowned in the area near the Fragko. Its beauty is responsible for the recognition of the island of Elafonisos.

Behind each of them stretch sand dunes that rise to 10m in height and back onto a forest of cedar trees that frames all those watercolours of blues, beige and green. Apparently, Simos got its name from a sponge diver from the island of Kalymnos, and Sarakiniko from the Saracen pirates who used the bay as a shelter during less tranquil times.
