The oldest part of the castle was built during the 13th century. It was then modified by members of the Römer family, who transformed it in a Renaissance castle between 1560 and 1570.

A wonderful castle rises in the green near the old town of Bolzano: Mareccio. Already in the 12th century, the field name "Moretes" appears which gave its name to the castle - built later on - and the noble family of its first owners. In the 13th century, only a massive donjon stood amidst vineyards which was enlarged later on by a curtain wall.

The castle is rests on flat land amongst vineyards near the banks of the gentle river Talvera/Talfer not far from the center of Bolzano.It was not considered a very defensible position, unlike the nearby castles Runkelstein and Sigmundskron. The final form of Castel Mareccio was mainly due to the Römer family, who in addition to expanding their castle added the beautiful Renaissance frescoes.
