The History of the Belle Tout Lighthouse

We begin with Belle Tout Lighthouse in East Sussex, the first significant project undertaken by our founder Ted Cullinan and a pioneering retrofit that would provide the foundations of the Studio ethos. Built in 1832 on the cliff tops of Beachy Head, Belle Tout lighthouse was in a state of dereliction by the time Ted Cullinan's parents.

The Belle Tout Lighthouse came into operation on the 11th October 1834 and was manned around the clock by two lighthouse keepers. The location of the lighthouse was carefully planned so that the light was visible for 20 miles out to sea and that the light would be obscured by the edge of the cliff if sailors were too close to the shore.

1923 - The Belle Tout Lighthouse is bought by a London surgeon, Sir James Purves-Stewart. He carried out significant modernisations to the building, including an additional story, garages, electricity and Artesian well.
