Ogoto Onsen is a hot spring resort located near Lake Biwa. It is said to have been founded by Saicho, the founder of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. It has long been revered as a sacred spring, but it was not until around the Taisho era (1912-1926) that it was discovered that the spring was a radium mineral spring.

Stayed for 3 nights in a private onsen room. Hotel was a 10min car ride from Ogoto Onsen station and they are very thoughtful to provide free shuttle service anytime from station to hotel. We used the payphone outside the station to call the hotel once and weren't charged for less than 1 min talk. Hotel staff are extremely friendly and courteous.
