Philip Guston, (born June 27, 1913, Montreal, Canada—died June 7, 1980, Woodstock, New York, U.S.), American painter, a member of the second generation of Abstract Expressionists.. Guston studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles for three months in 1930 but was largely self-taught. From 1935 to 1940 he painted a number of murals for the Federal Art Project.
