Power comes from a 66bhp electric motor, which is less powerful than any of the diesel Partner vans, but it makes up for this with healthy instant torque. This power goes to the front wheels through a single-speed gearbox, and the Partner Electric has a top speed of 68mph, plus a 0-62mph time of 18.7 seconds.

Our test vehicle is the 2020 Peugeot Partner 130. The front-drive model is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine (96kW/230Nm) with eight-speed automatic transmission. The Peugeot Partner 130 slots into a three-model range alongside an 81kW/205Nm variant of the same engine with six-speed manual transmission and a 68kW/230Nm 1.

The e-Partner is unique in that it is the only smaller electric delivery van on the market. Priced at $59,990 plus the usual costs, the e-Partner is offered in a single, long wheelbase variant. Powered by a 50kWh lithium-ion battery, the e-Partner produces 100kW of power and 260Nm of torque and delivers a WLTP test range of 258km 2 .

On the road, the e-Partner is surprisingly good to drive for a basic small van - largely due to the fact that its mechanical underpinnings are shared with passenger-car models like the Peugeot e-208 and Citroen e-C4 hatchbacks. Engine noise is totally absent, of course, while wind and road noise are kept sufficiently at bay, too.

The Peugeot's payload is higher than the new rival.
