With its 30,000-year-old history and rich cultural roots, the town is fascinating in its own right. Over the centuries, Kufstein found itself intermittently disputed by Bavaria, Tirol and the Habsburg Empire. Warfare visited on and off for hundreds of years, leaving the town its most visible landmark, the prominent Kufstein Fortress.

Kufstein ( German pronunciation: [ˈkʊfˌʃtaɪ̯n] ⓘ; Central Bavarian: Kufstoa) is a town in the Austrian state of Tyrol, the administrative seat of Kufstein District. With a population of about 20,000 it is the second largest Tyrolean town after the state capital Innsbruck.

During our stay in Innsbruck, Austria in July 2016 my fiancé and I made a day trip to Kufstein and visited the fortress. Entrance was 11.50 Euro (ca. 12.25 USD) per person, which we bought at the fortress. The fortress towers over the city and is visible from afar. When we arrived it wasn't very busy. You can either walk or use the Panorama.
