The Kangal is also called Sivas Kangal, Turkish Kangal. There is a legend that the Kangal Dog derived from a lion and a tiger. Female Kangal mate twice a year and can have up to 10 puppies. The Sivas Kangal is strong enough to win against a wolf. It's Turkey's most famous breed.

The Kangal is a livestock guardian dog that was originally bred in Turkey. Their job is to protect animals like sheep and goats from wolves, bears and jackals. Their appearance and personality is founded on them being the perfect breed for guarding livestock. These dogs have been protecting farmer's livestock for over 1,000 years.

Similarly, breed standards for the Kangal dog have been established by several European kennel clubs including the United Kennel Club, the Fédéracion Cynologique Internationale.

The Kangal first made its way to the US in 1985, through the efforts of David and Judith Nelson. In 1998, the breed received official recognition from the United Kennel Club. How Do I Spot a Kangal? Kangals are usually easy to distinguish from other breeds. Aside from being gigantic dogs, they also have a uniform coat color of pale tan.

The true Kangal Dog color is always solid and ranges from a light dun or pale, dull gold to a steel gray, depending on the amount of black or gray in the outer guard hairs and in the soft, cashmere-like undercoat. This basic color is set off by a black mask which may completely cover the muzzle and even extend over the top of the head.
