I have JR-S201x2, JR-S301x2, a JR-S401 and a KD-S201 cassette deck that is the match for the 201 and 301 at 19-5/8" while the 401 and 501 are bigger at 22" long. The KD-S201 is the only one I have ever seen and has output level, left and right record. vol. sliders on the right hand side.. IMO, the JVC JR-S x00, and x01 were great receivers.

JVC has been in my family since 1967-8 starting with my dad's system which he still owns and works perfectly. I have a R-S77 receiver I've owned since new 1980 and is in continuous use. It's now connected to my MAC for streaming music. This past year I put together a component system with a A-X5 amp, T-X6 tuner and SEA 40 EQ, all form 1980-81.

All I know about the x00 series is that the JR-S600 has a toroid transformer while the similar-output-power '501 uses the ordinary cube transformer. Some folks have therefore decided that the '600 is a better bit of equipment than the newer-design '501. Unobtanium is inherent in older products.
