Malta's fortifications are considered to be among the best examples of military architecture anywhere in the world. Major General Whitworth Porter of the Royal Engineers, called Malta "the most powerful artificial fortress in the world" in his 1858 book A History of the Fortress of Malta. [1]

The main feature of the island is Fort Manoel, an eighteenth-century fortification built by the Knights of St. John. According to legend, Don Carlos de Grunenberg, military engineer to the King of Spain, was the first to propose a fort on Manoel Island in 1681.

Gżira, Malta Fort Manoel is a star fort on Manoel Island built in the 18th century by the Order of Saint John. Fort Manoel has been on Malta's tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998, as part of the Knights' Fortifications around the Harbours of Malta.

The first stone was laid in 1723 by Manoel de Vilhena, who occupied the Grand Master's position in that period. By 1734 the Fort already became an active military setting. During the French Invasion of 1798 the Fort Manoel was used for the first time according to its military purpose.

Fort Manoel was built by the Knights to protect Valletta's north-facing bastions from artillery action from the Isolotto in Marsamxetto Harbour. The first stone was laid in 1723, under the patronage of Portuguese Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena under the supervision of world famous engineer Mondion.

The open spaces will form part of the overall 186,000sqm of open spaces across the remainder of the island, of which 80,000sqm is the natural glacis park surrounding Fort Manoel.

Entrance to the Fort and the guided tours are free of charge. Built in the early years of 1700's by the Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena of the Knights of St. John and restored to its former glory by MIDI plc in the early years of 2000, Fort Manoel has stood majestically overlooking Marsamxett Harbour as a fine example to Malta's.

Fast forward to the 18th century under the Order of Saint John: Portuguese Grandmaster António Manoel de Vilhena built Fort Manoel, which has had various uses over the years. When we were in Malta this fort was closed for renovations, but I went for an evening stroll around Manoel Island. You can walk up past the marina, towards the fort and cut down to the water front at the base of the fortress walls and follow the shore line around the fort to link up back with the marina road.
