The Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas National Park is amongst the most important wetland systems both in Greece and throughout Europe. Beginning just 10 kilometres south-west of the city of Thessaloniki, the park extends as far as Pieria, an area of 38,800 hectares. The case of the lagoon Kalochori is unique in Greece, as it is a 'new' wetland.

When the Natura 2000 program arrived the park as it was became a protected area, Delta Axiou-Loudia-Aliakmona-Evryteri Periochi-Axiopouli, ID GR1220002. Hence references that name the park and the Natura area as the same place. They are managed by one and the same government agency.

In this study we examine anticipatory adaptation to coastal flooding at household-level in the Axios - Loudias - Aliakmonas National Park, located at the Thermaic Gulf in Greece. A questionnaire survey was conducted and respondents ( n = 491) were asked about actual adaptation behaviour as well as cognitive, socio-economic and housing variables.

The Axios Delta Information Centre is situated at Chalastra, at Eirinis Street, and constitutes the seat of the Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas Management Authority. People visiting the protected area can begin their tour of the region from here where they can find informative material and ecotourism maps with suggested routes.

This is the Axios Delta National Park, an expanse of protected wetlands covering more than 380 square kilometers and encompassing the deltas of the rivers Axios and Aliakmon (or Haliacmon), the estuaries of the rivers Gallikos and Loudias, and the wetlands of Nea Agathoupoli and Alyki Kitrous.

The lagoon The lagoon at Alyki Kitrous extends at a point where the earth juts into the sea, Cape Atherida, and it hosts great numbers of coastal birds who feed, overwinter and reproduce here. Especially in winter, the lagoon offers impressive moments, thanks to the thousands of flamingos who gather in its shallow water.

The Aliakmon is the longest river in Greece. From its sources in mount Grammos and Voios, it traverses approximately 350 km before it flows into the Thermaic gulf. Trench 66, which is 35 km long, also flows into the Aliakmon. Trench 66 was designed to receive part of the water coming from the drainage network of the former lake of Giannitsa.
