In fact its 4-cylinder 1565 cc engine derived from the Renault 16 TS engine develops 113 hp DIN at 6250 rpm. With these attributes and front ventilated disc brakes, it is a formidable machine. The Fuego arrived in the US in 1982, in both conventional and then also as a turbo model. The naturally-aspirated 1647 cc SOHC four made 81 hp; the 1566 cc turbo version cranked out a mighty 107 hp. The Fuego's advertising invited one to enter "the turbo zone" and share the same technology that made Renault's F1 turbocharged racers so.

This deluxe model was the priciest in Renault's U.S. lineup; upon introduction in 1974, its $5,310 cost—the inflation-adjusted equivalent of $27,700—was higher than that of a BMW 2002, and within $300 of a Corvette. That MSRP would increase annually, set at $6,195 (roughly $29,620) in 1975, $6,665 ($30,130) in 1976, $6,998 ($29,700) in 1977.

Renault Fuego Turbo - at last. Renault was responsible for bringing turbo charging to UK family motoring when it launched the 18 Turbo here in 1981. It seems incredible now to think that it took them another three years to bring the same technology to the more obviously sporting Fuego, but the R5 Gordini Turbo got the treatment first in early.

Launched in 1964, Renault 8 Gordini owed its name to its engineer, Amédée Gordini. It adopted re-designed drive trains, improved braking and a 95 hp engine (almost twice the power of the classic Renault 8 engine). In 1966, the "Gorde", as it was nicknamed, further improved by its engine (now 1300 cc), was equipped with a 5-gear gearbox.

The 5 Gordini Turbo is hardly different, at first glance, from the familiar and popular Renault 5. Priced at £5,750, compared with the £5,325 of the normally aspirated Gordini which it will be replacing, the Gordini Turbo is by far the most expensive 5 variant, but it undercuts all but the cheapest of the Fuego series, the only other cars in.
