2. Re: Do I fly to Olbia or Cagliari. Olbia is the airport for the Costa Smeralda, e.g. Porto Cervo - which doesn't really get going till July and August. Cagliari is of course the capital city of the island, so offers more "culture" but it isn't a beach resort, though not far from beaches.

Sardinia is a diverse & 'wild' island, July & August are the busiest & expensive months for the islands. Olbia as a city is not the ideal tourist destination, majority use it as an arrival city.

For beaches you would be driving out to Poetto (beware of the ZTL) and possibly further afield (Villasimius..) or you can combine culture and beaches.

You should be aware though that the in September the holiday season is coming to and end and some of the smaller resorts may already be closing down. You will have difficulty with public.
