La colline de Bellegarde (423 m) domine les cols du Perthus (271 m) et de Panissars (335 m), les plus bas de la chaîne des Pyrénées. Placé au centre de la vaste dépression formée par ces deux cols, Bellegarde a joué un rôle stratégique majeur au cours des siècles.
