The 50 T01 is quite an interesting rifle. It's based on the 1980's-vintage model 45 barrel-cocker's action (instead of the old model 35 as were earlier model 50's), and is generally regarded as the hardest-shooting tap-loading springer ever made. The Diana model 50 is an underlever spring-piston air rifle. That means the barrel doesn't open like a breakbarrel, so there has to be another way to load a pellet. On some underlevers the entire compression chamber slides back, exposing the breech, but others like the model 50 use a loading tap. A tap sits behind the barrel and rotates open.

Diana model 50/a. This early postwar version of the venerable model 50 was an upgrade from the standard sporter model, distinguished by superior sights. As you can see, the gun has two mounting rails for the rear sight--a longer one just behind the tap, and a shorter one overhanging the rear receiver cap--distinguishing it from the sporter.

6,590. That's an M&G Diana Original model 50E. The E either stands for export, or England. As I understand it, the E was a no-frills model (also sold to the British colonies branded as a Gecado) made expressly for the U.K. market from around 1952-60something.

There is also a forward ramp on the spring tube for the sporter sight, so there is enough distance for the eye to pick up the rear notch. The Diana 50 has two ramps for the rear sight. The one on the rear is for the target peep and the one in the front is for when the sight is converted into a sporting sight. The tops of each ramp are serrated.

According to the Blue Book of Airguns, Diana's model 50 was produced from 1952 until 1965, when the T01 variant took over. That one lasted until 1987, so in all the rifle had nearly a 4-decade run. The model 50 is an underlever spring-piston air rifle that came in both .177 and .22 calibers. I think the .22 isn't as common, since the 50 was.

The test. I shot indoors from 25 yards off a sandbag rest. I used the artillery hold with the rifle rested on my off hand, about 8-9 inches forward of the triggerguard. The Diana 50 is an underlever, and that steel cocking mechanism makes it heavy up front, so this is the most comfortable way to stabilize it.

The sight in the middle is the "Diopter 60." This was OEM for the models 60, 65, and 66 barrel-cocking recoilless match rifles from about 1963 to 1978. The unit on the left is the "Diopter 75," introduced for the model 75 sidelever match rifle in 1977. Either will fit most model 50's perfectly. The two share some internal parts and are similar.

In my experience, any Diana rifle made in the post-war years had an exceptionally good level of metal polish and blueing, and the springs and seals are also excellent and long-lived. The rear match sight is the Diana Diopter.
