In April, Olympus released their newest creation, the Olympus 35 SP. The Olympus 35 SP is the big daddy of the Olympus 35 rangefinder series. Top-of-the-line is a phrased used with this camera. The camera sits above the 35RD, and is considerably larger than the 35RC. However, the camera is fairly small/ average size when compared to modern mirror less cameras.

When compared to the diminutive RC the Olympus 35SP is a beast of a camera! It feels solid in the hands, the focus is smooth and quick with what I think is a short throw of movement on the focus lever. Manual metering takes some fiddling, but does work well once you get used to it.

The Olympus 35 SP was sold from 1969 to 1975, and it's a classic example of the genre. It has a number of disadvantages and (fortunately a rather longer list of) advantages over it's competitors: Disadvantages: The auto mode is a fully programmed mode with the camera setting both aperture and shutter speed.

The Olympus 35 SP is a 35 mm rangefinder camera made by Olympus in Japan. It is the only 35 mm rangefinder with a dual center-weighted average metering and spot metering system. Metering is also available in manual mode, which is quite unusual amongst Japanese rangefinder cameras of this era.

The 35 SP really has an immense amount going for it and it more than pulls its weight in the world of rangefinders, let alone fixed lens rangefinders. I thought I would add to the recent postings of classic 1960s and 1970s rangefinders. Last month, I was lucky enough to come across an Olympus 35 SP. I bought because it has the unusual feature of spot metering.
