In 1909 the painter Max Liebermann builds his summer residence in one of the most fashionable villa areas on the outskirts of Berlin. The garden is the centrepiece of the estate and is designed by Max Liebermann and Alfred Lichtwark, director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. In 1909 Max Liebermann was able to purchase one of the last available lakeside plots by the Grosser Wannsee. The Berlin architect Paul Baumgarten was commissioned to design the house. At Liebermann's request, Baumgarten based his design on the villas on the banks of the River Elbe in Hamburg, which the artist knew from frequent visits to the city.
