Kreidler, highly specialized in two-stroke mopeds, got its reputation with a string of 50cc world championships in the 1970s, with a team managed by the Dutch importer. As Kreidler hit financial problems, Van Veen was looking for a new ambitious project and the idea of the luxurious rotary-engined OCR 1000 superbike was born.
