Am 4. März 1916 fällt der Maler auf einem Erkundungsritt bei Braquis Nähe Verdun, durch Granatsplitter an der Schläfe getroffen und tödlich verwundet. Am nächsten Tag wird er im Park des kleinen Schlosses Gussainville bei Braquis beerdigt. 1917 lässt ihn seine Ehefrau Maria Marc auf den Friedhof in Kochel überführen.
