The AWO 425 was a shaft driven, 250cc four-stroke. There were two main AWO 425 models; the T (touring model) had plunger rear suspension, while the S (sport model) had a twin-shock swingarm rear suspension. The company was formed in 1854 when Lob and Moses Simson bought one-third of a steel factory in Suhl, Germany.

Simson was the largest East German moped manufacturer. Today they are a lot smaller, but still exist - see simson-motorrad.de. They began production in 1948 with a well made 250cc four stroke called AWO 425. By 1960 this bike was too expensive to make, compared to the MZ, so the communist government ordered them to make mopeds.

The 425 actually comes from 4 -stroke engine, 25 0cc displacement. It seems that AWO created a 425T model that was based on the BMW R23, then created the S model which was a sportier version. The bike has a dual loop tubular frame with a hydraulically damped telescopic fork and a 6V electrical system.
