The Northern Harrier is distinctive from a long distance away: a slim, long-tailed hawk gliding low over a marsh or grassland, holding its wings in a V-shape and sporting a white patch at the base of its tail. Up close it has an owlish face that helps it hear mice and voles beneath the vegetation. Each gray-and-white male may mate with several females, which are larger and brown.

The female builds a platform nest of sticks and vegetation on the ground, with the male also contributing material. Nests are usually located at or adjacent to rich hunting grounds, often in a wet meadow or freshwater marsh, and sometimes in a farm field or on a prairie. Female harriers lay three to six eggs, then incubate them for roughly a month.

Hosted by the Prairie Inn Harriers, the race is in North Saanich. Number, food, and awards pick up are at North Saanich Middle School, 10400 McDonald Park Rd, and the race itself starts and finishes at the Tourist Information Centre parking lot, 10382 Pat Bay Highway. This fast and flat course is very rural and run on quiet roads.
