I always figured Lorelai had a talk with Max before leaving town - wouldn't even surprise me if it was in the middle of the night. As for the town, Lorelai doesn't owe each person an explanation to why she didn't get married - and honestly getting the news to Ms Patty was probably the best way to make sure the entire town knew before her and Rory got back.
