Wilderness Drive is a one way street that runs along the western edge of Itasca State Park and cuts east back to near Douglas Lodge. It can be accessed by driving west on county Road 117 from the area near the Headwaters. While it can be driven, I found that riding a bike on the road was quite enjoyable. A loop can be made starting from Douglas.

Itasca State Park is an area highlight. You can walk across the tiny headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River, which is pretty wild. Wade in the knee-deep flow and hop over a couple of stepping stones, then boast you strode over the Father of Waters. The park also offers canoeing, hiking, biking and camping (tent and RV sites $18 to $32).

The Itasca State Park is located in a remote area in northern Minnesota and is home to the source of the Mighty Mississippi River. The Park is huge, more than 32,000 acres and birding here is excellent with a lot to see. We visited on a day with some showers, but fortunately were able to see the actual place where the Mississippi Rivers begins.

Preachers Grove at Itasca State Park has stunning towering pine trees, some of which are over 280 years old. Itasca State Park's Preachers Grove is a lovely grove of 280-year-old pine trees that grew following a big forest fire in the 1710s. It was fascinating to read that red trees rely on flames for reproduction.
