In 1967, Chippewa Park was the location of Fort William's first Day Camp. In 1974, the 10,000 square foot Chippewa zoo was demolished, while a five-year plan to construct a 500, 000 square foot animal sanctuary began. As of 1982, Chippewa Park had 80 tent sites, 60 trailer sites, and 18 original log cabins available for rental.
