In 1689, Urquhart Castle saw its last action, when a small garrison supporting the Protestant monarchy of William and Mary held off a much larger Jacobite force. Later that year the English Garrison left the castle, destroying it as they went, to prevent it from being used as a Jacobite base. Nowadays, the castle is owned by Historic Scotland.
