In the year of the iconic Hot August Night by Neil Diamond, it was February 4 1972 when the Holden Torana LJ broke cover. The General was chasing under-30s buyers and in October 1972 a knockabout, long-haired 27-year-old named Peter Brock winning Australia's great race in a Torana was the stuff of dreams for the folk at Fisherman's Bend.

In 1972, a 27-year old Peter Brock took to Mount Panorama in his Holden Torana. It would be Brock's first of nine Bathurst 1000 wins between 1972 and 1987, making him the "King of the Mountain".

The A9X engine was a development of the L34 Torana unit but in 1979 it was still a fairly stock item, with standard inlet manifold, heads, pistons, rods and crank; only camshafts and exhausts were free. The compression ratio was 10.5:1 and strictly enforced.

With Bathurst now just two weeks away, this week on Saturday Sleuthing we're going to feature the first part of a two-part exploration of the cars that drove Peter Brock to a record nine victories in the October classic. Brock made his Bathurst debut in 1969 in the Holden Dealer Team Monaro GTS 350, but it was in the smaller Holden Torana.

The 1974 V8 Torana L34 marked the end of Peter Brock's association with Harry Firth's Holden Dealer Team. Brock left HDT in '75, but in '78 he was drafted back into the factory-backed Holden Dealer Team under the new team manager, John Sheppard. The same Torana was used by Brock in the 1973 ATCC, earning his first ATCC race win en route to finishing runner-up to Moffat in the championship, before being sold by the HDT the following year. It passed through the hands of a number of owners, including Dick Johnson, and was still being raced when it was bought by current custodian Glen Amos.

Holden Torana Racing History. Peter Brock is one of the most iconic Australian race car drivers of all time. In his younger years he first got enamoured with racing by watching Spencer Martin, who just so happened to win the 1964 Mount Panorama with a Vauxhall Viva which is the car that the original Torana was derived from.

Early years. Peter Brock was born at the Epworth Hospital, Richmond, Victoria, the son of Geoff and Ruth Brock (née Laidlay). The family lived in the country town of Hurstbridge (now an outer suburb of Melbourne) and Brock continued to live there throughout his life. He attended Eltham High School in Eltham, Victoria. His first car was an Austin 7 that he bought for £5 (A$10).
