By The Adelaide City Explorer team. The facades of several city buildings were dramatically modernised between the two world wars. One was Sands and McDougall's South Australian headquarters on King William Street. John Sands and his brother-in-law Thomas Kenny formed a printing partnernship in 1851. Dugald McDougall joined them in 1860.

The former Sands & McDougall Building in King William Street, Adelaide is a small building with a narrow facade. In 1933 that narrow facade was redeigned by architectural firm Philip Claridge in association by L Gregory Butler and Norman G Fisher producing a multitude of Art Deco features.

The Sands & McDougall building - a brief history. Sands & McDougall was a firm of manufacturing stationers, printers and bookbinders. The original building on King William Street in the Adelaide CBD was designed in a classical style. Alterations to the premises were carried out in 1894, 1896 and 1924.

The former Sands & McDougall building facade is an outstanding and early example of Art Deco architecture in South Australia. The facade is highly intact and demonstrates many of the key attributes of the style, including vertical form; concentration of ornamentation at the top of the building; and stylised decorations made from coloured-pressed Portland cement, copper panels, and metal.
