Every few years something happens in Victoria's goldfields โ€” a sinkhole in a backyard, the discovery of a gaping hole next to a primary school โ€” to remind residents of the history waiting to reappear beneath their feet. Nobody is quite sure how many old mines are littered across Victoria, but the conservative estimate is 19,000.

There are about 50,000 abandoned mine sites across Australia, lying among communities and giving rise to myriad social, health and environmental concerns. Approximately 19,000 of these are in Victoria. Most of these mines date from Australia's prosperous gold-mining era, yet their impacts are still felt by communities today.

Victoria was the heart of the Australian Gold Rush in the 1850's with most activity occuring in and around Ballarat and Bendigo. The Gold Rush attracted people from around the globe, many from Europe and China, the miners were known as 'diggers'.

By June 1852 Bendigo had a population of 40,000. Through 1853 there were gold discoveries at Daylesford, Creswick, Maryborough and Maldon. In the second half of the decade there were rushes to the west at St Arnaud, Ararat, Stawell, Dunolly, Rutherglen and Chiltern, Jamieson, Blackwood. The ghost town of Whroo, Victoria, is an abandoned attraction in an abandoned ghost town built at an abandoned gold mine. Two sailors - John Thomas Lewis and James Meek Nickinson discovered a gold nugget in the grass at Whroo in 1854, the same date as Russia's Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War, hence the name.
